INTRODUCTION
AMG is proposing to expand the existing Cootamundra Abattoir to create a modern, efficient, and sustainable livestock processing facility. The Project will increase overall production capacity and help secure the long-term viability of operations in Cootamundra, strengthening the region’s economy and employment base.
The Project would involve the following works:
Demolishing some existing buildings and infrastructure, as required
Construction and operation of:
An additional rendering plant
A lamb boning room
A CO2 freezer plant room
Additional sheep pens
A larger administration building
Refit of the existing rendering plant
Upgrades to the existing wastewater system
Increasing the size of the existing carpark
The construction of an additional carpark (to the south of the existing carpark).
OUR VISION
The upgraded facility will be state-of-the-art, designed to support regional prosperity, environmental sustainability, and community wellbeing.
PROJECT GOALS
Build an advanced, efficient facility producing high-quality, export-ready meat and by-products
Increase processing capacity to strengthen market access for local and regional livestock producers, creating jobs and boosting regional resilience
Foster strong community partnerships through transparency and shared social and economic benefits
TIMELINE
APPROVAL PROCESS
Due to the investment value, the Project is classified as a State Significant Development (SSD). This means it will be assessed by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) and must follow a strict, structured approval process set by the state government.
AMG has completed the first stage of the SSD process through a Scoping Report which was submitted DPHI in mid-2025.
Since then, the Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARs) have been issued, which outline the necessary detailed assessments required for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which is now underway.
The EIS will include specialist impact assessment reports, such as:
Air Quality and Odour
Noise
Social Impact
Visual and Landscape
Waste Management
Hazards and Risk
Heritage
Biodiversity
Biosecurity, Disease Management and Animal Welfare
Traffic and Transport
The EIS allows DPHI to fully assess the merits of the Project while AMG engage with the Cootamundra community to better understand issues, concerns or opportunities.
LOCATION
The Project will be located at the current AMG Cootamundra Abattoir and adjacent lands, 5km to the northwest of Cootamundra at 572 Stockinbingal Road, Cootamundra, NSW, 2590.
